It is a field of internal medicine that deals with the overall spectrum of infectious diseases. It is a department that fights against all kinds of microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, fungi (fungi), and parasites that have been plaguing humanity from ancient times to today.
In the 20th century, the development of effective antibiotics and preventive vaccines made it possible to cure many of the previously helpless infectious diseases, and some of the infectious diseases completely disappeared from the planet.
Even in the late 1960s, there was a man who declared, "The days of infectious diseases are gone."
However, new infectious diseases such as AIDS, avian influenza, mad cow disease, and SARS have emerged since the 1980s, and the emergence of resistant bacteria that do not work with conventional antibiotics has also become a problem.
At this point, the Department of Infectious Disease of Daegu Catholic University Medical Center is continuously striving to accurately diagnose infectious diseases, use appropriate antibiotics, and prevent abuse of antibiotics. Also, we are focusing on preventing and treating infectious diseases related to overseas travel, which are increasing due to its recent generalization, and conduct counseling for adult immunization.
